After moving from JV to varsity starter her freshman year, Camp Verde High girls basketball player Amanda Lozanilla is off to a fast start this season.
“Amanda’s been doing amazing,” said CV head coach Mark Showers. “It’s interesting because last year as a freshman I put her on the JV to start out the year because she didn’t play for us in the summer time and I didn’t know how good she was going to be and when Hope (Ontiveros) got hurt, we pulled her up and she ended up starting for us the rest of the year and she really improved, came a long way and has become a really important part of back court tandem, her and Tanna (Decker), taking care of the basketball and getting the ball up the floor. So she’s extremely important to our team.”
This season Lozanilla is second on the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game, first in assists, 1.7 per game and first in steals with 2.8 per game.
“She likes to slash to the basket, she likes to take 3s but she’s real feisty, that’s probably the best way to describe her,” Showers said.
Last year she was honorable mention All-Central Region.
“She’s gotten a lot more confident, she’s a whole lot more confident this year than she was last, she’s developed more of her game, she is able to take the ball to the basket now, she’s shooting more 3s, her defense has really improved, we put her on some of the tougher offensive players from the other teams, she’s come a long way,” Showers said.
Lozanilla also plays soccer for Camp Verde.
“She’s a great kid,” Showers said. “I’ve known her since she was a little girl and she’s feisty off the court too but she’s just a great, supportive kid.”
VVN: How’s the season been going for you?
Lozanilla: Really good.
VVN: Is it kind of what you expected or a little different or…?
Lozanilla: It’s the way I expected. I knew that we’re sophomores, we’re young yeah, but we played the same as last year or a little better.
VVN: How good do you think this class is, your class of sophomores?
Lozanilla: Really good, we’re getting up there with all the rest of the teams that are higher than us but we’re good there.
VVN: Do you guys think about how fun it might be? I mean you’re doing well now but do you think about how much fun it might be in a couple years or next year?
Lozanilla: Well right now we’re doing really good but I’m excited for the years to come because I know we’re going to be better than this year.
VVN: How’s the season been going for you personally?
Lozanilla: Really good, I like it.
VVN: How’s your role changed this year with everyone more healthy than they were last year?
Lozanilla: We struggled last year a little bit cuz some of us didn’t know what we were doing but this year we’re communicating a lot more and we’re just playing together.
VVN: What goes through your head when you get a steal and you’re on a fast break and you’re all alone and you the basket right there? What kinds of things are going through your head?
Lozanilla: Hopefully I make it (laughs). I don’t think about it too much because then I’ll just miss it (laughs).
VVN: What’s your favorite part about playing basketball?
Lozanilla: The team. Definitely the team.
VVN: How long have you been playing basketball?
Lozanilla: Since sixth grade.
VVN: How did you get into it?
Lozanilla: My brother (laughs).
VVN: What’s your favorite sport to play?
VVN: How come?
Lozanilla: Cuz I just love the team and how we just love each other so much.
VVN: How’s school been going for you?
Lozanilla: Really good. I’ve just been struggling a little bit but it’s been good.
VVN: Do you know what you want to do after high school?
Lozanilla: Well I want to go into the army but my mom won’t let me, but I’ll probably go to college.
